I cannot believe that Marla is being so cool about this.
She has got Stuart Junior in front of her, actually questioning Corporate practices, and she’s acting like it’s no big deal.
People, we could be on the verge of a momentous turnaround in Mr. Josh Tobin’s world view … The next few moments could determine the entire course of his life!!!
I think she wants him to arrive at these solutions for himself. She doesn’t want to give him the answers he is finding on his own. When he finally realizes for himself how unfair this is, he may become as cynical as she is, in other words, welcome to the human race, Josh!
I thought the same thing. She’s handling this really well. If she was all “OOOH STUART LITTLE’S FINALLY GETTING IT THROUGH HIS THICK SKULL” all would be lost.
My wife and mother-in-law have on occasion mentioned that I could take this sort of issue to the labor board, and I’ve told them that, as a salaried employee, I’ve got NO ground to stand on. That’s why I’ve had 65-70 hour work weeks when corporate deems it “necessary” due to business conditions. No, they can’t FORCE you to work it: you’re always welcome to quit.
Watch for Stuart’s next visit, when Josh complains. Stuart will tell him ways to ‘delegate’ while accusing Marla of corrupting Josh &/or setting a bad example with her work ethic.
I agree that Stuart will arrive to try to re-program Josh. Marla’s cool logic only works if Josh has a life outside of work. Look for a romance or family emergency in Josh’s future, maybe.
I don’t know… I am in the “Josh is going to have an epiphany” camp.
It would make for some interesting stories to have Josh rebel against Stewart’s teachings… although that wouldn’t necessarily work in Marla’s favor. I would be interested to see the pendulum swing completely the other way as Josh’s bubble is burst and he becomes a useless slacker of an assistant who Marla would have to carry.
Besides Grumbles was just something for him to do while the economy improved. Eventually, he could be written out and a new character could be brought in for freshness.
It’s one of the reasons that I’ve never gone for management.
Sure, the increased bonus *should* make up for the shortfall on overtime, but if I went to one of the less profitable locations I might end up with a lower bonus than I get NOW, at a rather high-profit location.
I used to have an “Exempt” position at a University, and it was fantastic! Though there were occasional weeks when we had to work more than 40 hours, it mostly meant that we didn’t have to work a fixed schedule, could be counted as working a whole day even if we only came in for part of the day (as long as our supervisor was okay with it), and we got a ridiculous number of vacation days each year.
Exempt positions were highly coveted, and they’ve actually started transitioning them out as people retire and leave, to save money on healthcare and vacation days, I suppose.
Guy just spent 10 min trying to make a cash withdrawal from the Dr Scholls "Custom Fit" machine. It's gonna be a good day. #retailTime ago

You can find the exact wording of the FSLA here.

Five minutes until he starts flogging himself for questioning the retail overlords.
Marla is having WAAAY too much fun with this…
(as well she should)
I dunno, money might be the tipping point. Being stiffed out of a chunk of change changes people’s minds very VERY seriously.
I appreciate that Josh isn’t just re-skinned Stuart. It’s cool to watch him develop into his own character.
