I one time had a supervisor that didn’t seem to like me at my first retail job (that was still part time) and when I decided to work overnights during Christmas at my full time second retail job my second year in there, I decided to reduce my hours at the first one, remembering how dead on my feet and anything else I might be using for support at the time I was the year before. When I informed this supervisor that I wanted to cut back to 2-3 4hr shifts per week because of my pending overnight hours, he told me that since I wasn’t going to school, I could work the hours he gave me or find a job elsewhere. The more I thought abut it that night, the madder I got and decided that on my next night, I was going to leave a 2 week notice on the desk of the then new to our store Manager. In that letter, I told him that after discusing my availablity with said supervisor, I was going to take his advice and find a job elsewhere and that if they wanted I would be more than willing to work beyond the following 2 weeks or would be ok with being dropped from the schedule right then and there. Well, that supervisor decided to not schedule me any more after that week and then every time I was in that store between then and when he left, he would watch me lime I was going to shoplift from the store. Several months after that, I was talking to the manager who had just started at my store right before I left and he told me that he knew there had to be some sort of bad blood between myself and said supervisor, but wasn’t sure what it was until they worked together for a few more months……..apparently he encouraged that supervisor to go elsewhere………… He then told me if I was interested, I could have my old job back and even offered the same when he got transfered over to the store closer to the store I left them in favor of!

    • Don’t you know?! Once you sign on with Grumbel’s, your loyalty must be absolute. You’re expected to STARVE at the company’s whim, and praise their name while you do. Grumbels is you deity, your every waking thought, even if you’re not on the clock, even years after you leave, or you’re scum. And of course, the loyalty only flows one way. In return, expect derision, abuse, and neglect, and only the ‘reward’ of getting to do it all another day.

      So much truth in this comic. So very much.

    • I had the same thing happen when I worked for American Greetings. They cut our hours so badly it was impossible to get all the work done in the allotted time so it was either neglect some work or work free hours. We were not allowed to tell the managers of the stores why the work was not getting done, we were supposed to take the blame and fall on our sword rather than tell them the company had cut our hours. I ended up having to quit.

    • I once had a manager cut my hours “to get my attention” so she could talk to me about my attitude. The problem was not, apparently, that I was failing in any of my actual duties (no customer or coworker complaints, nothing that wasn’t getting done), but that I was walking around acting like this was “just a job”. Apparently, I needed to act like I was “more invested in the company.”
      I’m not sure what she was expecting, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t for me to say, “You’re right, I do treat this as ‘just a job’, and here’s why. You’re fairly new here, so I’ll fill you in – in three years, I have never received a raise, a performance review, or even a compliment from management that I can recall. When I started here, I did put in a lot of work – and none of it was ever acknowledged. If you want me to treat this as ‘more than a job’, you’re going to have to show me that you think of me as more than a robot. Incidentally, I think it is very unprofessional of you to punish me by cutting my hours *before* you even tried to talk to me.”
      I will be the first to admit I would not have had the balls to do that if I didn’t already have a plan for what I was going to do after I left that job, but it was *very* satisfying.

        • A long pause in which she opened her mouth about four times, then finally said, “Okay, I hear you. Well, we both have to get back on the floor, but I’ll definitely think about what you said and I hope you’ll think about what I said, and we can have a follow up discussion another time.” There was no follow up discussion and I quit three months later.

  3. I kid you not. This what our HR people tell applicants when HR calls and asks them if they’re still interested in being hired for a part-time position: “You have to have full-time availability”. Translation: “If you can’t come running to us whenever we need you then we’re not interested in you”.

  4. Not that I agree with the way Brice approached the situation, but I do have to understand where they are coming from on a corporate level. I have never worked for any sort of corporate office, just entry level type retail jobs, but it is understandable that they need workers when they need them. If the workers that are hired are not available when the need is the greatest, then neither party owes either one any favors. Donnie is more than free to find employment elsewhere that can better accommodate his schedule, while Brice and Marla now get to make the call if they can accommodate Donnie’s new availability, or if they will have to end up reducing his hours even further. Retail work never gives any promise they will be able to provide the hours/shifts you need. If you can only work in the middle of the day during the week, you can bet your hours won’t accommodate to much because there would be less staffing needs at that time. Donnie is clearly now not available when his hard work is needed the most, so he shouldn’t be surprised if his hours get cut…..

    • But he’s only now not available for those hours because his hours were *already* cut. If Grumbel’s hadn’t cut payroll, Donnie wouldn’t have needed the second job, and would have been available for the hours they need him. Essentially, if Grumbel’s cuts his hours further, they’re punishing him for their own decision to cut his hours in the first place.

  5. I’m not sure why everyone’s jumping on Brice’s case on this one. The store hired Donny to do a job and Brice is expecting him to do it. It’s not Brice’s fault they can’t give him more hours, but if he’s not there to do the job they hired him for he should probably either leave altogether. It’s harsh but both parties have their needs that are not being met so their relationship is no longer a good match. It’s not like Brice changed the stocking day to Thursday as a way to stick it to Donny.

    • Unless Brice just became aware of the stocking day change this still seems like Brice’s fault. Donny wouldn’t have taken those hours at the other job had he been aware he’d be needed at Grumbles during that time. It wasn’t Donny’s fault that he didn’t know that there had been a status quo change, it was Brice’s.

    • We’re jumping on Brice’s case because of his ridiculous idea that Donnie should have a sense of loyalty to a company that’s not allowing him to make enough money to live on. Loyalty doesn’t pay the bills.

  6. Once again, Brice is failing to see the big picture. Donnie says he can’t work Thursday nights. Thursday is now shipment day. In all of the retail operations I’ve been associated with, shipments come relatively early in the day, usually before the store even opens. It’s the slow season, so the shipments will be small. Shouldn’t be an issue. Of course, Brice likes to /make/ issues.

    • So what should Donnie do, wake up at 5am, do a shift at Grumbles, go home and then do an 8 hour shift at the restaurant? I mean I guess there’s no law against it but it seems a lot to ask.

  7. I like Donnie. He’s uncomplicated. He needs payroll hours to live a basic Donnie life. Brice, on the other hand, is all about his career at Grumbles so he can move on to the next bigger corporate entity. He sees Donnie as nothing more than a cog in his wheel of ambition. Donnie – stick to your guns. Nothing good will come from Brice. Oh, BTW. In our store, the truck came before 7:00 a.m. and it was unloaded quickly, then the stock moved to the floor as the day went on. Since this is a super-slow retail time, no biggie.


    That’s rich, coming from the person who probably told him he couldn’t get any more hours at the store – as instructed by Stuart, no doubt.

    Seriously, what the hell is it with managers and this “loyalty” crap? That went out the window years ago when companies that used to provide a living wage decided that employees were nothing more than replaceable parts that thrive on abuse. Sorry, Brice, respect and loyalty go BOTH ways. Donnie can’t make ends meet on your piddly-few hours, so why should he feel any loyalty to a company that doesn’t give him enough hours to pay his bills?
