    • Of course, you only need about a hundredth the amount to get the same sweetness.
When you come down to it, Water is lethal in large doses.

      • Wait, it makes things taste sweet? To me it just makes it taste more acidic. Oh well, I haven’t tried the plant based artificial sweetener yet, but all of the others I’ve had the mis-fortune to taste never tasted sweet either.

    • I have a cousin who learned the hard way just what Aspartame really is, red ant venom. He is severely allergic to red ant venom, and the first time he ever had a can of diet soda it nearly killed him. That was how my entire family learned what it really was.

      • Aspartame is not red ant venom. It can break down into formic acid (which is in red ant venom), in small enough amounts that most people’s bodies get rid of it faster than it can accumulate, but that does not mean that aspartame itself is red ant venom.

        • You should be concerned about what the OTHER ingredients in that cola are. Like glycerin, and artificial vanilla extract which are derived from petroleum. Yes they are carcinogenic, thanks for asking. phosphoric acid (Cola consumption has also been linked to chronic kidney disease and kidney stones.) The Carmel coloring is also a toxic carcinogen and mutagen. mmmmmm

  1. I remember a chain email from centuries back called The Horrible Truth that bluntly addressed a few elephants in the room, one of which was “Attention fat people: Diet Cola is not a slimming tonic” :)

  2. That warning label does need to exist. Far to many people drink diet soda ‘because it won’t make them fat’ and then drink several times as much of it as they would of regular soda, negating any potential benefits.

  3. This is an ongoing battle I have going with my fiance…to cut out his soda intake completely. He tries to be “good” by then drinking diet soda but as I keep reminding him…his body still reacts to the sweetness the same way as it does to sugar. Plus of course it’s a harsh chemical…

Of course though, I do use splenda in my coffee in the morning…

  4. I agree with all of you, and this is one of my soapbox issues. Diet pop is poison. It is not thirst quenching at all, and can lead to serious health issues. Water is the best thing for quenching thirst.

    • I always hated Diet Coke (and diet soda in general) but for a while I was drinking it at work in the mornings (got in the habit for the caffeine; I’ve since switched to tea). Only from the soda fountain because it’s a little more palatable than cans or bottles for some reason. Then my stomach started bothering me all the time. Then I took a week of vacation and didn’t have any diet soda and lo and behold, my stomach stopped bothering me, too!

One of my college roommates was addicted to the stuff; there were always at least a few nearly-empty cans scattered around the room at any given time. Drove me crazy.

  5. I am addicted to diet coke. Always have been and always will be, so there is no point in trying to change it. However, I am also getting my degree in exercise and nutrition science, so I am well aware of both the risks and benefits of diet soda.

  6. Diet Cola tastes nasty. I’d rather drink less than drink that garbage… which is what I do… I stopped bringing the big 24 or 12 packs home a while a go… no soda at home anymore.

  7. I rarely even drink any soda (if I have no other choice I stick with Sprite/7Up), but my boyfriend drinks it religiously. I’ve tried buying fruit juices instead, but found out that he drinks those at twice the rate of soda!

  8. I did find a use for Diet Coke for a while… When chronic allergies generated a post-nasal drip that irritated my throat and stomach, I discovered the pop dissolved the drip!

  9. I figured out years ago that what I was actually craving was the fizz, not the sweet. I rarely drink pop of any kind anymore, and instead, drink Perrier, the lemon or lime kind. It has the hint of flavor without any sweetness. When going out, I get Soda water with lime wedge.
    Yummy.
My husband can’t understand how I can drink that stuff, but it quenches the thirst, takes care of the fizz craving, and no sugar.
And it’s still a treat, so anyone who has anything to say about the sodium, the 6 bottles or so I go through in two weeks won’t amount to much.

  10. plain and simple soda is bad for you. The health risks should be on the label they are for other cancer causing, disease causing things. They should be on this as well

  11. BLECH, can’t stand the taste of diet soda at all (or Pepsi either…………), I do have a hard time avoiding Coke, but I try to keep that to a minimum when ever possible unless it’s for that “jolt” of sugar and caffine when I need that………which seems to be worse sometimes moreso than others.
