  1. Marla you might as well quit trying to convince him. To him corporate can do no wrong. Even if you could convince him it won’t make any difference. They make the call and everyone has to jump through the hoop even Stuart.

    • Marla might as well quit the job and open Clutch Cargo. Grumbel’s will file for Chapter 11 by the end of the year due to this stupid idea anyway, so it’s not like she wouldn’t need to at a later date. It won’t make any difference.

        • Bingo!! and Stuart will blame Marla by saying she didn’t try hard enough to convince him it was bad yada yada yada or she didn’t instruct floor team proper placements etc

  2. Oh Grumbles, you should take a lesson from a retail giant in the non-comic dimension – JCPenny.

Penny’s philosophy is to hire the genius behind New Coke (seriously) from Apple and let him apply the same approach to clothing as he did to iProducts – no sales and make the store more of a specialized boutique. 4th quarter sales for 2012 were close to a third lower than they were in 2011, despite a rising trend in retail sales.

At least Christmas numbers are so small and insignificant that they don’t have an impact on the entire company’s outlay for the next year.

    • Except for two things. The yearly “doom and gloom” retail list hasn’t been terribly correct for chain closures. They keep ragging Sears and they keep holding on.
And there if you stop to think about it there are a number of ELP business models that aren’t getting negative press.

      • Ron Johnson at JCP? Oh, let’s see. Maybe because before he was at Apple, he totally revolutionized Target, changing it from an also ran to the place that it is today?
