Favorite DC Characters
February 8, 2021DC Comics are loved because of their amazing comics and characters, and because they have Batman! DC or Detective Comics was founded in May of 1934 and is one of the oldest American comic book companies, and also one of the largest. The company was not officially called DC Comics until 1977 and it has such a long history behind it, that we might like to cover one day, but for now we would like to focus on some of our favorite DC characters and their amazing stories that many of us grew up with!
Batman
Who else, if not Batman – the one and only! He made his first appearance in DC Comics issue 27 in May of 1939. First Bruce Wayne was a young boy, who witnessed the death of his beloved father and mother, who were both murdered right in front of his innocent eyes. He was only a seven-year-old boy at the time! The tragedy is what pushes him into training himself into physical and intellectual perfection and he does eventually put on the costume years after that and fights villains and crime in Gotham City. Bruce used to be afraid of bats and he chose it as his symbol as he overcomes his own fear, so cool! By issue 38, Batman was no more alone in his fight against the evil in Gotham and therefore his associate Robin was presented. The dynamic duo, we all adore! Two of the most famous villains of all time, The Joker and Catwoman, were introduced by the 1940s. Among the many things we love so much about Batman is that he does not have any superpowers and he is purely an ordinary man, like all of us, making him somehow relatable. He is the smartest and the greatest detective of all time and is unstoppable against any enemy! He is also in full control over his mind and body and his judgement is never cloudy, resulting in his great sense of justice.
Superman
One of the most recognized superheroes in the world, Superman, made his comics debut in Action Comics #1 in June 1938 and became known as the world’s first superhero. At the time it sold for 10 cents only, while by 2014 it became the only comic book to have sold for more than $3 million for a single original copy. The birthname given to Superman was Kal-El and he was born at the planet Krypton. A natural cataclysm destroyed his planet, but just moments before that happened, his parents managed to send him away to planet Earth on a small spaceship, in order for him to survive. He landed on American soil, somewhere on the countryside and near a fictional town, called Smallville. Jonathan and Martha Kent, a farmer’s family, found him and adopted him, giving him the name of Clark Kent. Over the years Superman has gone through many changes and at the beginning, when his powers first started to develop, he became incredibly strong, he gained great speed, he managed to jump really high and his skin was actually bulletproof. It was later on, when he really started to fly and to use his x-ray vision. His Kryptonian body is basically a living solar battery, that is absorbing solar energies and is adapting them into a fuel for his own powers. He was advised by his adoptive family to use his skills for the assistance of humanity and he made the decision to fight crime. Superman stands for everything good and right in the world and is the true embodiment of a superhero.
Wonder Woman
Among the most known and coolest heroes in comics, Wonder Woman is a fictional superheroine from American comic books, published by DC Comics. She is also among the founding members of the Justice League. Her debut appearance was in All Star Comics issue 8 in October 1941 and her first feature was in January 1942, in Sensation Comics issue 1. She was the first prominent female superhero and her creators were the psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston and the artist Harry G. Peter. As per her initial storyline, Wonder Woman, or Diana was an Amazon warrior princess and she grew up on a hidden and enigmatic island. Due to the evilness of man, the Amazons had parted from Greece and while they were guided by Aphrodite, they went to the promised paradise island of peace and protection. Therefore, they built a city there and no man was allowed to enter. Diana’s mother did not give birth to her, but instead she formed her out of clay and the Olympian gods brought her to life, so she was way more special and nothing like the other Amazons. What happened one day is that Steve Trevor, an American intelligence officer, crashed near the island and Wonder Woman found him and nursed him until he was well again, but she fell in love with him in the meantime. After she won a tournament, she was chosen to take Trevor back to the United States. She had to stay there and fight evilness. The popular costume she wears and the magic lasso of truth were given to her by her mother. Wonder Woman is beautiful, wise, fast, strong and overall an amazing heroine that fights for peace!
